Metaldyne Connecting Rods Featured on Award-Winning Ford 1.0L EcoBoost Engine
Plymouth, Mich. – June 27, 2013 – For the second consecutive year, the Ford 1.0L EcoBoost gasoline engine has been voted the International Engine of the Year, earning the highest cumulative score in the 15-year history of the award. The award is determined by a panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries. This is only the third time an automaker has won the award two years in a row. Metaldyne supplies powder metal forged connecting rods for the Ford 1.0L EcoBoost engine, a three-cylinder turbo with direct fuel injection and twin independent variable cam timing.
Metaldyne produces connecting rods using its proprietary powder metal forging process, which allows Metaldyne to deliver a high-strength connecting rod that is also lighter with a more controlled weight, with near-net-shape manufacturing that delivers best-in-class raw material yield. Metaldyne produces connecting rods for the 1.0L EcoBoost engine from its location in Valencia, Spain and is adding production capacity in Suzhou, China.
“Metaldyne is proud to supply connecting rods on this award-winning Ford engine,” said Thomas Amato, Metaldyne’s president and CEO. “We continue to invest in our connecting rod technology to support the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, as well as other fuel efficient engines for Ford and other Metaldyne customers.”
The engine’s compact size and power output impressed voters. With 123 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 148 pound-feet of torque from 1,400 to 4,000 rpm, the engine is small enough to fit in the overhead bin of a passenger airplane.
The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is currently offered in the European Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX, with further plans to put the engine in the Transit Connect, Transit Courier, Tourneo Connect, Tourneo Courier, Mondeo and EcoSport. The first vehicle in North America to offer the 1.0L EcoBoost will be the Fiesta later this year.
